					<p>
    You strive to be your best at work, at home, and at everything you do. Most days you're satisfied with what you've accomplished, but there are times when you glance at the clock and realize it's already 3:00 pm and you haven't made a dent in your to-do list. If you need help getting things done, there's no shortage of productivity tools available. There are apps to manage your schedule and share tasks, YouTube videos to demonstrate how to prioritize your time or organize your closet, and life coaches, workshops, and online courses to help you set and achieve goals.
</p>

<p>
    These productivity boosters are just one part of the equation. To perform at a consistently high level, the key is to <a href="/blog/how-a-hot-tub-can-help-with-new-years-resolutions">build healthy, productive habits and stick with them</a> until they become an established part of your daily routine.
</p>

<h2>
    Do's and Don'ts for creating a routine you can stick to.
</h2>

<p>
    Maintaining good habits isn't always easy. How many times have you congratulated yourself for getting into a positive new routine, only to revert to old patterns a few days later? So many things, trivial or significant, can knock you off track - a bad night's sleep, a traffic jam on the way to work, a sick child, a global pandemic. Whatever the reason, you'll miss a day, then a couple more, and suddenly you're back where you started &mdash; and the habit you felt so good about is now just a memory. Why does this happen, and how can you avoid it?
</p>

<p>
    A successful and productive routine begins with thoughtful planning. As you create and execute your plan, be on the lookout for these common pitfalls:
</p>

<ul>

    <li>
        Having unrealistic expectations of yourself.
    </li>

    <li>
        Being a perfectionist.
    </li>

    <li>
        Not allowing time in your schedule for things to go wrong.
    </li>

    <li>
        Forgetting to schedule breaks and downtime.
    </li>

    <li>
        Focusing too much energy on one area of your life.
    </li>

    <li>
        Committing to a process or activity that you don't enjoy.
    </li>

    <li>
        Committing to a habit that is inconvenient, impractical, or doesn't fit your lifestyle.
    </li>

    <li>
        Procrastinating, justifying, and overthinking.
    </li>

    <li>
        Creating goals that don't lead you where you ultimately want to go.
    </li>

</ul>

<p>
    Avoiding these common productivity roadblocks will help you stay on track as you work toward your goals. Planning out your day will not only help you organize your time and maintain healthy habits but can provide you with a sense of control and reduce stress, even during uncertain times.

<h2>
    How a Hot Tub Can Make You More Productive.
</h2>

<p>
    At Hot Spring&reg; Spas we believe in creating a healthy, sustainable routine that allows you to balance work, family, and your own personal well-being. Having a hot tub at home can help. <a href="/blog/how-often-should-i-use-a-hot-tub-take-the-daily-soak-challenge">Starting your day with a warm, invigorating soak</a> in your Hot Spring spa can deliver the focus and vitality you need to give your best to whatever is on your to-do list. And that's not all!
</p>

<p>
    Here are just some of the ways your hot tub can help you stick to your routine, feel better, and make progress toward your work, fitness, and family goals:
</p>

<ul>
    <li>
        Start Every Day Strong. Scheduling a 20-minute soak first thing in the morning gives you a reason to skip the snooze button and get your day off to an invigorating start.
    </li>

    <li>
        Get Creative in Your Backyard "Think Tank". Your hot tub time provides the perfect launch pad for productivity by providing a calm, dedicated space that encourages clear thought, creativity, and problem solving.
    </li>

    <li>
        Improve Your Workout. Sore muscles and stiff joints can keep you from your regular workout. <a href="/blog/soaking-hot-tub-or-after-exercise-good-sore-muscles">Take a soak before or after exercise</a> (or both). Either way, heat therapy helps increase blood flow, stimulate healing, and relax muscles, helping you warm up before you start and recover faster when you're done, so you can keep moving and stick to your healthy routine.
    </li>

    <li>
        Balance Work and Family. Your hot tub can provide you the vitality and focus you need to deliver your best at work. Then, when you come home, you can <a href="/blog/creating-quality-time-the-benefits-of-spending-time-with-family-in-a-hot-tub">connect with loved ones</a> in a comfortable, distraction free environment that encourages deep conversations.
    </li>

    <li>
        Have Energy to Take on the Day. <a href="/advantages">Immerse yourself</a> in warm water and invigorating jets &mdash; you'll emerge feeling rejuvenated with the vitality you need to make things happen!
    </li>

    <li>
        Prepare to Sleep Soundly. Lack of sleep can make you feel groggy and unmotivated, making it hard to stick to your regular routine. A fifteen minute soak under the stars can help you relax and <a href="/learning-center/hot-tub-benefits/sleep">drop your body temperature, enabling a good nights sleep</a>.
    </li>

</ul>

<p>
    To get the most benefit from your hot tub, use it every day. After a couple of weeks, we're willing to bet it will become a routine you wouldn't dream of missing! Morning, afternoon, or evening &mdash; whatever time you choose, a warm soak can help you be at your best and improve your performance at work and at home.

    Whether you're eco-conscious or just trying to save a buck, seeking ways to conserve water is good for the planet and your savings account. The world has gotten hotter and dryer, and our water resources are diminishing. So, we owe it to ourselves and to Mother Nature to be as water efficient as possible. Fortunately, you don't have to forego the hot tub you've been dreaming of to do that.
</p>

<p>
    Some modern hot tubs-even <a href="/shop/highlife/grandee">large seven-seat spas</a> that hold 450 gallons of water-aren't only comfortable and stylish, they're also water-efficient. This is because when it comes to conservation, it's not the amount of water in a hot tub that matters; it's how long the water lasts before it needs to be drained and refilled.
</p>

<p>
    A spa with a standard hot tub water sanitation system has to be completely drained and refilled a few times a year. But a spa with a modern salt water system, such as the integrated, titanium cartridge-based <a href="/shop/water-care/freshwater-salt-system">FreshWater&reg; Salt System</a>, which is exclusive to Hot Spring&reg; and Watkins Wellness&reg;, means your hot tub water can last a whole year.
</p>

<p>
    To learn how the FreshWater&reg; Salt System works and to discover more water conservation tips, read on!

<h2>
    EASY WATER CONSERVATION TIPS FOR HOT TUB OWNERS
</h2>

<p>
    Conserving water as a hot-tubber doesn't involve much work. Instead, it just requires <a href="/owners/maintenance-and-tips">regular care and maintenance</a>, a bit of forethought, and some minor common-sense adjustments to your spa habits.
</p>

<h3>
    1. Reduce Draining Frequency by Investing in a High-Quality Water Sanitation System
</h3>

<p>
    With traditional chlorine and bromine spa water care systems, sanitizers require manual replenishment often to kill bacteria and keep the water clean. They also leave behind chemical residues, which can build up and create odors and cause skin and eye irritations. As a result of the residue build-up, hot tubs using these systems must be drained and refilled once every three to four months. The FreshWater&reg; Salt System, available as an option on <a href="/shop/limelight">Hot Spring Limelight&reg; Collection</a> spas and <a href="/shop/highlife">Hot Spring Highlife&reg; Collection</a> spas, offers hot tub owners a better, simpler choice.
</p>

<p>
    The titanium cartridge-based FreshWater&reg; Salt System generates chlorine from salt and automatically releases it into the water in slow, steady amounts, eliminating the need to add sanitizers manually to keep the spa clean. This not only makes water care easier, it also leaves no residue, keeping the spa water clear and silky on the skin and extending its life up to 12 months.* And longer water life means less draining and refilling, and less water wasted.
</p>

<p>
    The FreshWater&reg; Salt System is easy to use. A prompt on the spa control panel reminds the spa owner to test the water every 10 days. With the touch of a button, the owner can adjust the chlorine output level. Cartridge replacement is needed only once every four months to keep the water clean and always ready to use. With proper maintenance and normal spa use, draining and refilling is necessary only once per year. Water conservation has never been simpler.
</p>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/hot-spring-hot-tub-water-conservation-tips_800x599.jpg"
    width="100%"
    alt="Close-up of a person replacing a blue and white hot tub filter, demonstrating maintenance of the filtration system for clean and clear water."
    loading="lazy" />
</figure>

<h3>
    2. Clean and Replace Filters Regularly
</h3>

<p>
    Even the best spa water sanitation systems <a href="/owners/maintenance-and-tips">depend on efficient filters</a> to help keep the water clean and free of dirt, dust, insects, and leaves.
</p>

<p>
    To<a href="/blog/how-do-hot-tub-filters-work"> keep filters working properly</a>, they must be cleaned regularly. Most are easy to access and remove. A quick check once a week will keep you apprised of their condition. Look for cracks, wear, and tearing when you inspect. A brief rinse with a garden hose will clear them of contamination. High-quality filters will last two to three years.
</p>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/HotSpring-Limelight-2018-Beam-ArticWhite-CostalGray-Lifestyle-LiftnGlideCoverlifter_568x426.jpg"
    width="100%"
    alt="Woman in a purple swimsuit and patterned sarong lifting the cover of an outdoor hot tub, with a scenic mountain and city view in the background."
    loading="lazy">
</figure>

<h3>
    3. Cover Your Hot Tub When You're Not Using It
</h3>

<p>
    Quality hot tubs come with a <a href="/shop/accessories/replacement-covers">durable cover material such as WeatherPro<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> polyester</a>. Always cover your hot tub when it's not in use to prevent water loss due to evaporation and contamination from fallen leaves or sap, birds and insects, and particulate matter. A spa cover will also greatly improve your hot tub's energy efficiency by helping regulate water temperature, and can help reduce your electric bill.
</p>

<p>
    Because spa covers can be heavy and difficult for one person to move, consider investing in a <a href="/shop/accessories/cover-lifters">hot tub cover lifter</a>. A cover lifter will allow you to easily remove and replace the cover. It will also help ensure you never leave your spa uncovered.
</p>

<h3>
    4. Check for Leaks
</h3>

<p>
    The <a href="/blog/how-to-find-the-most-reliable-hot-tubs">best hot tubs are reliable</a> and durable. <a href="/blog/what-are-hot-tub-shells-made-of">Spa shells</a> and cabinets should not crack or warp under normal use. Your best defense against a leak is to keep an eye on the water level and inspect the outside cabinet for moisture and the area around the base of the cabinet for water every time you use your spa. When you <a href="/blog/how-to-drain-a-hot-tub-refill-it-and-get-it-ready-for-use">drain and clean your hot tub</a>, check the pipes to see if there's any noticeable rot or wear and check inside the compartment for moisture.
</p>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/hot-spring-hot-tub-water-conservation-tips-4.jpeg"
    width="100%"
    alt="Underwater view of a woman in a blue swimsuit reclining in a hot tub, with powerful hydrotherapy jets massaging her legs and back."
    loading="lazy" />
</figure>

<h3>
    5. Aim Jets Consciously
</h3>

<p>
    As a hot-tubber, the most obvious way to conserve water is to keep it inside the spa. Modern hot tub jets are powered by strong motors, so if the nozzles aren't aimed below the waterline, some water may splash out. Over time, this could lead to a lot of water loss. Adjusting your nozzles to assure you always get the perfect massage will help keep your water level in check.
</p>

<h3>
    6. Rinse Off Your Birthday Suit and Your Bathing Suit Before Using Your Hot Tub

</h3>

<p>
    While your water care system will remove impurities in the spa water, you'll want to do your part to prevent further tainting of the water. In addition to checking the filters and always covering your spa when not in use, rinse off quickly before entering your spa to remove oils and sweat from your body. If you soak in your hot tub in the same <a href="/faq/will-using-a-hot-tub-damage-my-swimsuit">bathing suit you wear</a> when swimming in a pool, river, or ocean, rinse it, too, before stepping into your spa. Avoid a long shower, as the goal is water conservation after all. And don't use soap; its residue will linger in the water, defeating the purpose of your rinse.
</p>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/hot-spring-hot-tub-water-conservation-tips-800x600-1.jpg"
    width="100%"
    alt="Smiling woman in a blue swimsuit relaxing in a bubbling hot tub, enjoying the soothing water jets with lush greenery in the background."
    loading="lazy" />
</figure>

<h3>7. Reuse Water as Gray Water</h3>

<p>
    Instead of draining your hot tub into the nearest sewer, reuse it as gray water. It's not good for drinking, but it can be used to water (non-edible) plants, flush toilets, and to wash your car, deck, or house. If you plan to use hot tub water this way, you'll need to let it sit in the spa, covered, for three days without adding chemicals.
</p>

<p>
    If you're shopping for a spa and concerned about your water use, you can rest easy. With the FreshWater&reg; Salt System and some due diligence, you can do your part to be as water-efficient as possible and save a few bucks along the way. Happy hot tubbing!

    <em>
        *Many factors affect the life of spa water, such as bather load and water chemistry. When these factors are accounted for and the spa is properly maintained, the FreshWater Salt System will keep water clean and clear for up to a full year.

    Hot tubbing in light rain is among the more pleasant experiences in life. The warm water of the spa soothes your muscles and joints, and relaxes your mind as a gentle rain falls on your face. Hot tubbing in the snow offers a similar experience. Watching the snowflakes dance into the water as you feel the day's tension leave your body is incredibly satisfying. So, a little weather during your soak can definitely be a good thing. But is it good for your hot tub?
</p>

<p>
    An outdoor spa is exposed to the elements, and over time-a lot of time-it will naturally become weathered. A durable cover and other hot tub accessories will protect your hot tub in the rain, snow, sunlight, sleet, cold, and hail year after year.

<h2>
    How your hot tub cabinet and systems are protected in the rain
</h2>

<p>
    High-quality <a href="/advantages">hot tubs have well-designed components</a>, which are manufactured with materials that stand up to harsh weather over a long period of time. Superior cabinets are waterproof and made of weather-resistant, UV-resistant synthetic materials to prevent fading or bleaching due to sun exposure and to <a href="/blog/how-much-does-hot-tub-cost-winter">maintain energy efficiency</a>, especially in cold climates. The best-insulated hot tubs have multi-layered, <a href="/blog/comprehensive-guide-hot-tub-insulation">full foam insulation</a> that lends flexible structural support to the spa, which is particularly useful since the hot tub's structure expands and contracts with changes in temperature.
</p>

<p>
    Most important, cabinet insulation protects the spa's interior components from damage due to rain, snow, other types of weather, and even humidity. Without protection, ambient humidity-particularly in salty-air, seaside locations-can wear on spa parts (the heater casing, pumps, and electrical connections) that may be exposed to the elements.
</p>

    </em>
</p>

<p>
    A <a href="/blog/are-hot-tubs-good-investment">hot tub is a large investment</a>, so in addition to making sure you purchase a spa with weather-resistant materials, take care of it after bouts of harsh weather. When snow piles around the spa cabinet, shovel it away. When snow mounds or drifts onto the cover, brush it off. If <a href="/blog/choosing-the-best-placement-for-your-hot-tub">standing water accumulates</a> around the hot tub after a rainstorm, consider digging a drainage ditch. And, in the hot sun of summer, use an umbrella to shield yourself and your hot tub from the worst UV rays as you <a href="/blog/the-wellness-routine-that-relieves-pain-and-improves-quality-of-life">enjoy the health benefits</a> of your soaks.
</p>

<figure>

    width="100%"
    loading="lazy" />
</figure>

<h2>
    A durable spa cover, cover lifter, and umbrella will protect your hot tub in the rain
</h2>

<p>
    A <a href="/blog/what-are-the-best-accessories-for-my-outdoor-hot-tub">spa cover, cover lifter, and umbrella</a> will protect your hot tub year-round. A top quality spa, including <a href="/shop-hot-tub-models">every Hot Spring&reg; spa</a>, will come with a cover that should be used whenever the hot tub isn't occupied.
</p>

<p>
    Your cover is on the front line in the battle against sun rays, snow, and rain, so you'll want one constructed of durable, weather-resistant materials, such as heavy-duty polyester. The cover casing should be thick and tear-resistant, but with a little give to absorb the impact of hail. And its insulation should be dense enough to trap the spa's heat, even in temperatures below freezing.
</p>

<p>
    A high-quality spa cover is heavy and difficult to move. For that reason, you might choose to use it less. But that decision could cost you. When your spa is left uncovered, heat escapes and its shell is exposed to the fading properties of the sun. So, it's wise to invest in a <a href="/shop/accessories/cover-lifters">hot tub cover lifter</a>.
</p>

<p>
    A cover lifter assists you as you lift, fold, or slide the cover off your spa. Of course, your cover lifter will also be exposed to the weather. All Hot Spring cover lifters are designed for seamless integration with our custom-fit spa covers, so there's no unsightly metal bar protruding above the spa. Instead, the bar is tucked inside the cover and protected from the elements.
</p>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/stretch-video-cover-image.jpg"
    alt="Hot tub covers protect your spa's shell."
    width="100%"
    loading="lazy"/>
</figure>

<p>
    For even more weather protection, consider investing in a <a href="/blog/what-are-the-best-accessories-for-my-outdoor-hot-tub">hot tub umbrella</a>. A weighted, spa-side umbrella effectively shades you while you're in your hot tub and protects you from the elements during a soak. Your hot tub cover protects the shell from the effects of the sun and should always be used when the spa is not occupied.
</p>

<p>
    When <a href="/blog/hot-tubs-for-sale-near-me-narrowing-in-on-the-perfect-shopping-experience">shopping for a spa</a>, choose one that's made with high-quality, durable materials. With the right home spa and the best weather-resistant accessories, you can <a href="/blog/10-Tips-For-Using-Your-Hot-Tub-In-Winter">enjoy delightful soaks in the snow</a>, drizzle, and sun, day after day, year after year, for as long as you own your hot tub.
</p>

					<p>
    When relaxing in your hot tub alone or with your family, enjoying the clean, warm water and the health benefits of immersion and powerful jet massage, it's easy to see how your spa adds value to your life. But does it add value to your home?
</p>

<p>
    That's a question many homeowners ask as they shop for their first spa or prepare to sell a home with a hot tub in the backyard. But the answer depends on the buyer and, often, on the climate in a seller's location.
</p>

<p>
    A hot tub might offer a sense of luxury, but there's no guarantee that feeling will translate to dollars. Some prospective buyers touring the home might see themselves relaxing in the spa and enjoying its many advantages; others who know little about hot tubs may think only of its <a href="/blog/7-ways-technology-has-simplified-hot-tub-maintenance">maintenance, which in reality is simple</a>.
</p>

<p>
    Still, under the right circumstances, a hot tub might add value to a home. After all, not every home on the market offers relaxing hydrotherapy steps away from the back door.
</p>

<h2>
    FOR SOME BUYERS, A SPA MAY ADD VALUE TO A HOME
</h2>

<img decoding="async" src="https://hotspring-2018.s3.amazonaws.com/blog/add-value-your-home/buyers-value-hot-tubs.jpg" alt="In cold climates, a spa adds value to your home." width="100%" />

<p>
    If a prospective buyer has spent any time at all in a hot tub, he or she will grasp its value. But it's also important to remember that not all buyers live in the homes they purchase. Some buy with the intention of renting.
</p>

<p>
    A spa is a feature that may appeal to landlords, especially those who rent at the upper end of the market, because it could add value to a rental home—read: more monthly rental income. A spa can also mean the difference between a luxury rental and just another home for rent.
</p>

<p>
    Short-term home rentals are also increasing in popularity. So, if you are a home buyer interested in owning a <a href="/blog/the-benefits-and-costs-of-owning-a-hot-tub-on-your-vacation-rental-property">vacation rental property</a>, a hot tub will make the property stand out among others in the area.
</p>

<p>
    <strong>
        <em>
            Learn about the value a hot tub can bring to your life and home by exploring Hot Spring&reg; spa Collections.
        </em>
    </strong>
</p>

<h2>
    IN CERTAIN CLIMATES, A SPA COULD ADD VALUE TO A HOME
</h2>

<img decoding="async" src="https://hotspring-2018.s3.amazonaws.com/blog/add-value-your-home/certain-climate-hot-tub-value.jpg" alt="Renters and vacationers will both pay more to stay in a home equipped with a hot tub." />

<p>
    One of the greatest experiences you can have as a hot tub owner is <a href="/blog/10-Tips-For-Using-Your-Hot-Tub-In-Winter">enjoying a soak outside in winter</a> as the snow falls. The value of the moment needs no explanation. A close second to that experience is enjoying a similar circumstance at a ski lodge or slopeside vacation rental.
</p>

<p>
    If you're selling a home with a spa in a northern city or town with long, cold winters or near a ski resort, a buyer—landlord or not—might be willing to pay a bit more.
</p>

<p>
    The same may hold true for homes in the southwest, where temperatures can plunge when the sun goes down. In Arizona, for example, the average nighttime temperature in May <a href="https://www.currentresults.com/Weather/Arizona/Places/phoenix-temperatures-by-month-average.php">plunges from 95 degrees Fahrenheit to 69 degrees</a>, which is perfect hot tub weather. In New Mexico, summer temperature swings are even more extreme, with nightly lows in the <a href="https://www.usclimatedata.com/climate/new-mexico/united-states/3201">40-50 degree range</a>. Additionally, in California, which has a moderate year-round climate, a spa can be enjoyed in all seasons. Home buyers anywhere may find a hot tub valuable.
</p>

<h2>
    HOT-TUBBERS KNOW THE TRUE VALUE OF A HOME SPA
</h2>

<img decoding="async" src="https://hotspring-2018.s3.amazonaws.com/blog/add-value-your-home/true-value-of-spa.jpg" alt="A spa adds value to a home in the eyes of anyone who's ever enjoyed the benefits of a hot tub." width="100%" />

<p>
    A home hot tub's value is truly experiential. Hot-tubbers appreciate that a warm soak is just outside the door and that their spa is ready anytime they're in the mood. For them, <a href="/blog/what-is-hot-tub-therapy">the value of warm water immersion</a> is something no one can really put a price on:
</p>

<ul>
 	<li>
         <strong>Buoyancy.</strong> A hot soak <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4327375/">takes pressure off your muscle and joints</a>, allowing them a break from gravity.
    </li>
 	<li>
         <strong>Reduction of inflammation.</strong> Immersion helps with recovery, compressing and supporting the muscles and reducing inflammation from a hard day's work or a workout.
    </li>
 	<li>
         <strong><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4049052/">Dilation of blood vessels</a>.</strong> In warm water, blood and the oxygen and nutrients your body needs to heal flow more freely.
    </li>
</ul>

<p>
    The benefits of a spa continue after a soak, too. Once you emerge from a hot tub, your body temperature falls, triggering sleepiness. A <a href="/hot-tubs-101/hot-tub-benefits/sleep-benefits-of-hot-tubs">hot soak before bed helps guide you to a restful night's sleep</a>.
</p>

<p>
    People who have experienced the many benefits of a hot tub understand the value it brings not just to a home, but to everyday life. They form a segment of home buyers who are eager to take advantage of those rewards every day in their own backyards. A listing that features a picture of an attractive home with an equally attractive home spa is sure to glean looks from interested buyers.
</p>

    After a series of open houses, offers, and counteroffers, you've finally closed on a new house that you love. Congratulations! All that's left to do now is move your things and start a new life in the home of your dreams. You'll also find out who your best friends are-they're the ones who will show up on moving day.
</p>

<p>
    Even those dear and true companions may be intimidated, though, when faced with moving a hot tub. Spas can be quite large and awkwardly shaped. But properly prepared hot tubs are easier to move than you might think. Although enlisting friends to help is not the best way to move a hot tub safely, and moving a hot tub on your own could be expensive and void any existing warranty (more on that below), it is possible.
</p>

<h2>
    Prepare Your Hot Tub for Safe Moving
</h2>

<p>
    It's not a difficult process, but draining the water from your spa before moving it isn't simply a matter of emptying the shell; you'll also have to drain the pumps and pipes.
</p>

<p>
    Follow these steps to thoroughly drain your spa:
</p>

<ol>
 	<li>
        <strong>Disconnect the power supply.</strong>
        Locate the breaker switch inside the circuit box and turn it to the off position. For 110v spa models, simply pull the plug from the wall. Note that hot tubs directly wired to the power supply will require an electrician and/or a spa service representative to safely disconnect.
    </li>

 	<li>
        <strong>Connect a hose to the drain valve.</strong>
        Find the drain valve, remove the cover, and then connect one end of a garden hose to the valve and run the other end to an appropriate drainage spot.
    </li>

 	<li>
        <strong>Open the spa drain valve to release the water.</strong>
        You can allow the water to drain on its own, but that can be a slow process. Use a <a href="/hot-tub-accessories/more-spa-and-hot-tub-care-products">submersible water pump</a> to speed things up considerably and drain the water in 10 to 15 minutes. Keep in mind that in some areas, it is illegal to dump spa water into a drain that leads to the ocean and you can be fined for doing so.
    </li>

 	<li>
        <strong>Use a wet-dry vac to clear the remaining water.</strong>
        Even when using a submersible pump, some water will puddle at the bottom of the spa and remain in the pumps and piping. Use the vac to remove puddles and then switch the vac to push mode. Place the nozzle of the vac on the drain valve to push the remaining water from the pipes out through the jets, and then use the vac to clear the pushed water. If you're moving your tub to an environment where temps are below freezing, this step is especially important. Fully draining your spa is also a vital part of <a href="/blog/how-to-winterize-your-hot-tub" >winterizing your hot tub</a>.
    </li>

 	<li>
        <strong>Clean the spa.</strong>
        Once all the water is removed, you might want to take the opportunity to thoroughly clean the spa and <a href="/blog/how-to-repair-hot-tub-scratches-cracks-stains">repair any surface scratches</a> before moving it.
    </li>

</ol>

<p>
    Take a look at this video to see exactly how to drain and refill a Hot Spring&reg; spa:
</p>				</div>
				</div>
				<div class="elementor-element elementor-element-fe90e63 elementor-widget elementor-widget-video" data-id="fe90e63" data-element_type="widget" data-settings="{&quot;youtube_url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S4IEMSDGoYw&quot;,&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;youtube&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}" data-widget_type="video.default">

					<p>
    With the spa thoroughly disconnected from power and drained, it can be moved. However, you'll want to plan the route you'll take to get the spa from its location to the street or your driveway.
</p>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="https://hotspring-2018.s3.amazonaws.com/blog/hot-tub-safely/clear-route-move-hot-tub.jpg"
         alt="Local spa dealers safely deliver and move hot tubs every day."
         loading="lazy" />
</figure>

<h2>
    Choose a Clear Route Before Moving a Spa
</h2>

<p>
    High-quality hot tubs, including Hot Spring spas, are extremely heavy-even when empty. Therefore, do not attempt to move your hot tub yourself.
</p>

<p>
    Before getting help moving your spa, note its height and width, as well as the height and width of door or gate openings and stairs on the path you plan to take when transporting it. Determine if and how your hot tub will clear the full path not only at your old home, but also at your new one. You should also plan to use a dolly, large piece of cardboard, plywood, or even a thick blanket to ease its movement over the ground. When using a dolly, be sure to factor in its height. This is important for determining clearance of house eaves, etc.
</p>

<p>
    Once you have determined the best route, tilt the hot tub onto its side on the cardboard, plywood or blanket. With the help of friends, slide it carefully along your chosen path, taking your time each step of the way.
</p>

<p>
    The following video from Tampa Bay Hot Tubs, a Hot Spring dealer, shows what goes into moving a spa correctly:
</p>
				</div>
				</div>
				<div class="elementor-element elementor-element-b935e35 elementor-widget elementor-widget-video" data-id="b935e35" data-element_type="widget" data-settings="{&quot;youtube_url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LN-ICZnsv7A&quot;,&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;youtube&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}" data-widget_type="video.default">

					<p>
    In certain circumstances, depending on where your spa is located, you might need to move it by crane. Many dealerships are experts at this delivery option.
</p>

<h2>
    The Best Way to Move a Hot Tub Safely Is With the Help of a Trained Spa Mover
</h2>

<p>
    No one knows how to safely and efficiently move a hot tub like your local spa dealer. Trained hot tub technicians disconnect, drain, and move spas every day. They've very likely saved a few friendships in the process, too. Your dealer will not only move your spa to your new home, but also install it and ensure that it works properly. While it may seem like moving your hot tub yourself is a smart way to save money, doing so may <a href="/blog/cost-repair-your-hot-tub">void your warranty, which could increase the cost of repairs</a> that need to be made as a result of the move or in the future.
</p>

<p>
    If you've had your hot tub for awhile, it may be time to shop for a new spa instead of moving your current spa to your new home. When you <a href="/hot-tub-owners/what-is-the-trade-value-for-your-used-hot-tubs">trade in your spa</a> and upgrade, it's value can be put toward a brand new hot tub with the newest features and options to match your new life and your new home exterior, <a href="/blog/the-4-most-stunning-hot-tubs-for-decks">deck, and backyard</a>.
</p>

<p>
    <strong>
        <em>
            Hot Spring is a leading home spa manufacturer with a network of dealerships around the world. Whether you want to move your hot tub or you're interested in trading in a current model for a new spa, a Hot Spring <a href="/hot-tub-dealers">dealer near you</a> is uniquely qualified to serve your needs now and for as long as you own your spa.

    When it comes to the safe enjoyment of your hot tub, maintaining clear, sanitary water is a must. But for many first-time spa owners the task of monitoring and balancing levels of chlorine, alkalinity, pH, phosphates, and water hardness can seem daunting.
</p>

<p>
    We realize the last thing you need is another complicated chore. That's why Hot Spring&reg; Spas water care and filtration systems are designed to <a href="/blog/7-ways-technology-has-simplified-hot-tub-maintenance">simplify your water care routine</a>. Our carefully engineered <a href="/blog/how-do-hot-tub-filters-work">Hot Spring spa filters and pumps</a> work together to trap unwanted particles like body oils, lotions, dirt, and other environmental debris, while options like the <a href="/hot-tub-water-care/freshwater-salt-system">FreshWater&reg; Salt System</a> deliver the right amount of chlorine automatically to help simplify water care. If you choose not to use a dealer installed water care system, you can opt for the traditional water care method. This takes a little more time and effort and requires manually adding chlorine and other chemicals as needed. Whatever water care system you choose, it's important that you start with well balanced water from the time you first fill your hot tub.
</p>

<h2>
    Test your water before filling your hot tub:
</h2>

<p>
    One of the most important things you can do to ensure the success of your water care routine takes place before you put a drop of water into your hot tub. You've probably noticed that tap water can taste and even look different depending on where it comes from. In some areas, you might enjoy drinking a glass of water right from the tap, but in others you wouldn't dream of drinking or cooking with unfiltered water. In addition, well water in rural areas might be high in metal or other minerals and require extra treatment.
</p>

<p>
    To adjust for the quality of your water, be sure to test it before filling your hot tub. Take a sample of your fill water (the water that comes out of your hose) to your local dealer so they can determine if it contains high levels of metals, phosphates, and/or calcium. If high levels are detected, your dealer can recommend <a href="/hot-tub-water-care/products">additional products to help bring your fill water into balance</a>.
</p>

<p>
    Are you using well water or have high metal content in your water? If so, this step is extra important! Iron and manganese should be below 0.5 parts per million (ppm) and copper should be below 0.2 ppm. If metals are present in the water, they can be filtered out during the fill process using the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Opsv6FlYd0" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Link: View video on YouTube" alt="Link: View video on YouTube">FreshWater Clean Screen&reg; Pre-Filter</a>. FreshWater Stain and Scale Defense can also be used at this time.
</p>

<p>
    During set up, it's also important to test for phosphates in your fill water using FreshWater Phosphate Test Strips. Phosphates can be present in city and municipal water sources and contribute to algae growth which will reduce the effectiveness of your salt system.
</p>

<h2>
    Once your spa is up and running, use test strips regularly to check your levels of alkalinity, pH, calcium or water hardness, phosphates and chlorine.
</h2>

<p>
    Color-coded test strips can be purchased from
    <a href="/hot-tub-dealers">your local hot tub dealer</a>. There are <a href="/hot-tub-water-care/products">different test strips available</a>, depending on your water care system.
</p>

<p>
    Your Hot Spring Spas dealer can help you choose the appropriate strip from these options:
</p>

<ul>
    <li>
        FreshWater 5-Way Test strips for Bromine, Chlorine, pH, Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness
    </li>

    <li>
        FreshWater Salt Test strips for salt levels (applicable only for FreshWater Salt System)
    </li>

    <li>
        FreshWater MPS Test Strips for MPS, alkalinity and pH
    </li>

    <li>
        FreshWater Phosphate Test Strips for phosphate levels
    </li>

</ul>

<p>
    When you dip a test strip in your spa water, you will see if the alkalinity, pH, calcium or water hardness, chlorine levels, and overall condition of the water is within acceptable levels (see test strip packaging for instructions).
</p>

<p>
    If you're a visual learner,<a href="https://youtu.be/-0PeOA-hn6c?si=rSvD_0tr9SE1y5gv" target="_blank"> check out this short video</a> that describes testing your water's chemical levels.

    width="100%"
    alt="A family of four splashing around and laughing together in a chlorine hot tub."
    loading="lazy" />
</figure>

<h2>
    Testing and Adjusting Alkalinity:
</h2>

<p>
    With your test strip in hand, you'll first test the water's alkalinity. Alkalinity is a measurement of how well your water neutralizes acid. The higher the alkalinity, the more acid it will take to lower your water's pH. The pH of spa water is important because chlorine works best at eliminating bacteria at a certain pH level (more on this below). Be sure your spa water is warm when you test it.
</p>

<p>
    Dip your test strip into the water and compare the color of the strip to the color on the product packaging to interpret the reading. Consulting your packaging is especially important if your test strip measures multiple water conditions at once. The color of your test strip will let you know if the alkalinity level is too low, too high, or just right.
</p>

<p>
    The alkalinity level should be between 80 and 120 parts per million ppm. If it's not in that range, you'll have to adjust it. Sodium bicarbonate will raise the alkalinity level; sodium bisulfate will lower it. These products, packaged by various manufacturers, are sold under names including "spa up" and "spa down" and "alkalinity up" and alkalinity down." You should always use the product recommended by your spa's manufacturer. If you're unsure, consult your local dealer - they'll be happy to help!
</p>

<h2>
    Testing and Adjusting pH level:
</h2>

<p>
    After testing and adjusting alkalinity levels, use the same test strip to check the pH level of your spa water. pH describes how <a href="https://www.sciencing.com/alkaline-vs-basic-6132782/" target="_blank">acidic or "basic"</a> your water is on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Numbers below 7 describe acidic substances, while numbers above 7 describe basic substances. Chlorine destroys bacteria best when the pH level is between 7.2 and 7.8, which is slightly more basic than true neutral.
</p>

<p>
    If your pH level is outside the acceptable range-and you're sure your alkalinity levels are correct-use the <a href="/hot-tub-water-care/products">pH up or pH down product </a>that your manufacturer and dealer recommend to coax it back to the right level.
</p>

<p>
    While various products may work to adjust your pH, it's always best to use products manufactured by or at least approved by your hot tub's manufacturer. Always check with your local dealer before using any product in your hot tub.
</p>

<figure>

            New technology in water care makes maintenance easier, allowing more time for you to enjoy your spa.
        </p>
    </figcaption>
</figure>

<h2>
    Testing and Adjusting Water Hardness:
</h2>

<p>
    After you've tested and adjusted your spa water's alkalinity and pH levels, the next step is to check your water's hardness. Hardness refers specifically to the amount of calcium and magnesium in the water
</p>.

<p>
    Water hardness results directly from the mineral content of your water source. That means, if your tap water comes from a municipal well with high levels of natural calcium, you'll likely have hard water in your hot tub. Hardness will not change much as you soak over time; it will only go up or down when you add or remove water or add or remove calcium.
</p>

<p>
    The ideal amount of calcium and magnesium in your water is between 175 and 275 ppm. If you have too much of either, your water will not hold chlorine effectively. Scale may begin to grow on the spa shell and in its plumbing, and your water may be cloudy. Products such as <a href="/hot-tub-water-care/products">Vanishing Act&reg; and the FreshWater Clean Screen&reg; Pre-Filter</a> can lower calcium levels.
</p>

<p>
    If you have too little calcium, the shell, plumbing, and jets may all experience corrosion from the soft water. Fortunately, the remedy for this is simple: add calcium. Your local dealer will show you approved calcium products to use in your hot tub, which will likely include the following:
</p>

<ul>
    <li>
        Vanishing Act
    </li>

    <li>
        Vanishing Act XL
    </li>

    <li>
        On The Go portable water softener
    </li>
</ul>

<h2>
    Testing and Adjusting Phosphate Levels:
</h2>

<p>
    Phosphates are salts made up of phosphorus and oxygen and can be combined with a variety of minerals, molecules, or compounds. Even if they are not present when the spa is filled, these phosphates build up over time in spa water and can increase chlorine demand by accelerating the growth rate and quantity of algae and bacteria.
</p>

<p>
    The acceptable range for phosphates is 0 - 300 ppb (parts per billion): Phosphate ppb levels above 300 ppb can lead to damage of the salt cartridge by coating the electrodes with calcium phosphate scale, which is difficult to remove. That's why it's important to test water using FreshWater Phosphate Test Strips on a monthly basis &mdash; especially when there are problems with maintaining chlorine levels, or if the spa water changes color. Treat the spa water when phosphate levels exceed 300 ppb and continue to test on a regular basis Phosphate removal products can be purchased from your local Hot Spring Spas dealer. These products are easy to administer and will strip phosphates from the water, producing a solid that can be filtered out.
</p>

<h2>
    Shocking Your Hot Tub:
</h2>

<p>
    To make sure nothing overwhelms your base layer of chlorine, it's a good idea to "shock" your spa once a week and after it's been used by many people at once. Shocking your spa means giving it a large dose of chlorine to break down any buildup of contaminants that can cause an odor or cloudy water. Your dealer can direct you to manufacturer-approved spa shock products.
</p>

<h2>
    A Simple Water Care Routine Will Keep Spa Water Fresh and Sanitary:
</h2>

<p>
    Keeping your new hot tub in pristine condition comes down to testing your water regularly and adjusting it as necessary. Just a few minutes each week is all it will take to enjoy the <a href="/blog/the-wellness-routine-that-relieves-pain-and-improves-quality-of-life">benefits of your spa</a> whenever the mood hits you. Test strips and adjustment products are available as kits from <a href="/hot-tub-dealers">your local dealer</a>, who is also always on hand to answer any questions you have about your spa.
</p>

<p>
    At Hot Spring&reg;, we believe that the time you spend in your spa should be the best part of your day. That's why we work hard to simplify the hot tub water maintenance process, whether you choose the<a href="/hot-tub-water-care/freshwater-salt-system"> Freshwater Salt System</a>, or another water care option. Owning a vacation rental is a fantastic way to bring in extra income on a monthly basis or even diversify your property investment portfolio. Whether you rent a home in a long-established vacation spot or you've just listed a second home on Airbnb, increasing your property's value will likely always be top of mind. What can you do to bring in more guests and justify a price increase? One thing is to install a hot tub.
</p>

<p>
    If you go about it smart, your hot tub will quickly pay for itself. Here's a guide to the benefits and costs of owning a hot tub on your vacation rental property.
</p>

<h2>
    BENEFITS OF OWNING A HOT TUB ON YOUR VACATION RENTAL PROPERTY
</h2>

<p>
    The ultimate goal of owning a rental property is to improve your financial situation. Owning a hot tub can help you do so, in two main ways:
</p>

<ul>
    <li>
        It can bring in more guests
    </li>

    <li>
        It allows you to raise your rental rate
    </li>
</ul>

<p>
    A hot tub can separate your rental property from others in the area. It's novel for guests who don't own their own home spa, and familiar and welcome to guests who use their own hot tub as part of their daily wellness routine. If you have the only hot tub in a well-visited vacation spot, guests will be more attracted to your location and may be willing to pay a higher price. Conversely, if other rentals include a hot tub and your property doesn't, guests may pass you over for the competition or demand a lower rate.
</p>

    width="100%"
    loading="lazy"/>
</figure>

<h2>
    HOW A HOT TUB BRINGS MORE GUESTS TO RENTAL PROPERTIES
</h2>

<p>
    In colder, northern climates, especially in areas near ski slopes, a hot tub can seduce guests to your property. They'll love returning to your rental after skiing, hiking, or snowmobiling for a warm, relaxing soak as the sun sets. Even guests who spend a lot of time indoors on vacation will be enticed by your hot tub as a luxurious way to spend their downtime.
</p>

<p>
    A spa is also a draw in vacation spots <a href="/blog/can-you-use-a-hot-tub-in-summer">during the summer</a> and shoulder seasons. Cool mornings and brisk twilight are when vacationers will be at your property, not out visiting area attractions. They'll welcome the chance to relax and spend time in the hot tub with the family members and friends joining them on vacation.
</p>

<p>

    width="100%"
    loading="lazy"/>
</figure>

<h2>
    HOW A HOT TUB HELPS YOU INCREASE RENTAL RATES
</h2>

<p>
    If you're already booking as many guests as you'd like, you can increase your rental revenue by raising your rates. Finding the right rate is a balancing act. Setting a rate that's too low will limit your income; setting it too high will limit the number of bookings. Remember, people will only be willing to pay prices that are reasonable for the area and that are warranted by the amenities your offer. Having a hot tub is a great way to justify a rental rate increase and quickly pay off your hot tub investment.
</p>

    alt="Guests may be willing to pay extra for a hot tub."
    width="100%"
    loading="lazy"/>
</figure>

<h2>
    COSTS VS. BENEFITS OF OWNING A HOT TUB ON YOUR VACATION RENTAL PROPERTY
</h2>

<p>
    In addition to the initial cost of a rental property spa, you'll also have to pay to keep it clean, running, and in good repair. When deciding whether or not a <a href="/blog/are-hot-tubs-good-investment">hot tub is a good investment</a>, consider the amount of money you'll make as a result of decreased vacancies and increased rates. Then, compare it to the total initial and ongoing <a href="/what-are-ongoing-costs-owning-hot-tub">costs of owning a hot tub</a>.
</p>

<h2>
    QUANTIFYING HOT TUB BENEFITS
</h2>

<p>
    Nobody knows your rental property and the area's vacation market like you do. So, only you can determine whether adding a hot tub is a good investment. Start by reviewing your vacancy percentage, your rental rates, and <a href="/shop-hot-tub-models">new spa prices</a> and maintenance costs in your area.
</p>

<p>
    The lower your vacancy percentage, the more you stand to benefit from bringing in more guests with a hot tub. If you currently book at or near 100% annually, your vacancy percentage is zero and you don't need to bring in any more guests. But if your vacancy rate is 50-75%, investing in a hot tub could take you from two to three booked weekends per month to three to four. Booking guests for even one additional weekend per month can significantly increase your revenue.
</p>

<p>
    If you're already at or near capacity, you can increase revenue by raising your rates. The amount by which you increase your rates will depend on the rental rates in your market. If the market warrants, an increase of $40 per weekend night during a six-month `high season,' for example, will net an additional $1,920. If you also increase your weekday rental rate by just $20 per night during those same six months, you'll see an additional $2600. Seemingly small increases can add up over the course of a year.
</p>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/benefits-and-costs-of-owning-renting-5_800x600.jpg"
    alt="Family vacation memories in the hot tub."
    width="100%"
    loading="lazy"/>
</figure>

<h2>
    UNDERSTANDING HOT TUB COSTS
</h2>

<p>
    A new hot tub will require both initial and ongoing payments. The total costs of owning a hot tub are:
</p>

<ul>
    <li>
        <strong>Initial Price.</strong> Quality hot tubs can cost anywhere between <a href="/blog/how-much-does-hot-tub-cost">$4,000 and $13,000+</a>. Most hot tub dealers offer financing plans, with <a href="/what-is-monthly-payment-if-i-finance-hot-tub">repayment periods between 36 and 60 months</a>. Hot tub prices increase based on quality, performance, size, and design. Keep in mind that it's well worth it to pay more upfront for a spa that will be used by a lot of guests at a vacation home. There are some downsides to buying an inexpensive spa, including that you'll have to replace it more often since it won't withstand the elements. Additionally, low-quality parts will wear out quickly. While it can take 3-5 years to pay off a hot tub, it will last a decade or more if well maintained.
    </li>

    <li>
        <strong>Energy Usage.</strong> Running a hot tub will increase your monthly utility bill. The new amount will depend on location, hot tub size, energy prices, and other factors. Purchasing a <a href="/blog/comprehensive-guide-hot-tub-insulation">quality hot tub with good insulation</a> will help keep utility costs low.
    </li>

    <li>
        <strong>Cleaning and Maintenance.</strong> The amount of time and money it will take to keep your spa water clean depends on the water care system you choose. High-tech systems such as the <a href="/ace-salt-water-hot-tub-system">FreshWater® salt system</a> can greatly reduce your maintenance needs and ongoing costs. If you're not always on-site at your rental property, consider investing in a service plan from <a href="/hot-tub-dealers">your local dealer</a>. These plans can roughly cost between $125 and $260 per month, though actual charges will depend on the dealer. A service plan guarantees your spa will always be well-maintained and in ideal condition for your guests.
    </li>

    <li>
        <strong>Repairs.</strong> Even with the best service plan, sometimes wear and tear will require repair or replacement of hot tub components. <a href="/blog/cost-repair-your-hot-tub">Spa repair costs</a> depend on the seriousness of the issue, naturally, but low-cost repairs are more common than high-priced repairs. Since a major factor affecting the cost of hot tub repairs is the level of your warranty coverage, it's critical to purchase a spa with great coverage. If you buy your spa from a reputable manufacturer, the different components will each come with warranty coverage for varying lengths of time. Keeping a close eye on a hot tub at a rental property can greatly reduce repair costs. With a remote spa monitoring system like the <a href="/shop/accessories/smart-spa-technology">Hot Spring Spas App</a>, you can track your hot tub's temperature, usage, and maintenance needs from your tablet or mobile device.

    <li>
        <strong>Liability and Insurance.</strong> As a vacation property owner, you already have rental liability insurance. Depending on your state and insurer, a new hot tub might or might not be covered under this policy as a standard amenity. If not, you'll need to extend your coverage, which will likely mean a higher rate. Talk to your insurer to learn more about your specific liability coverage options.
    </li>
</ul>

<p>
    Once you compare the costs of a hot tub against the return you can expect from an increase in rental bookings and rates over the lifetime of the spa, you'll likely discover that the cost is well worth it. Plus, when your property isn't booked, you can take advantage of all the <a href="/blog/the-wellness-routine-that-relieves-pain-and-improves-quality-of-life">health benefits your new hot tub provides</a>.
</p>

    A hot tub offers a soothing, relaxing experience each time you use it. It provides daily enjoyment, relief, and comfort, and can <a href="/blog/the-wellness-routine-that-relieves-pain-and-improves-quality-of-life" >improve your quality of life</a>. Because your spa takes care of you, it's only fair that you give it a little TLC in return. It doesn't take much to <a href="/blog/real-cost-maintain-hot-tub" >maintain your spa</a> on a regular basis -just keep the water clean, and periodically drain it, clean it, and refill it. Here's how.

<h2>
    WHEN TO DRAIN YOUR HOT TUB
</h2>

<p>
    Your hot tub is great at <a href="/hot-tub-accessories/more-spa-and-hot-tub-care-products" >keeping itself clean</a>. Whether you use a chlorine, bromine, ozone, or salt water system to purify your spa, you enjoy pristine water, free of contamination, for months on end. With every system, you'll need to change the spa water now and then.
</p>

<p>
    If you use a <a href="/hot-tub-accessories/easy-hot-tub-water-care-chlorine-maintenance" >traditional chlorine or bromine system</a>, you should change the water in your spa about every three to four months. If you use the FreshWater&reg; Salt Water System, you'll need to change the water in your hot tub a lot less often-just once a year.
</p>

<p>
    <strong>
        <em>
            Discover the <a href="/ace-salt-water-hot-tub-system" >FreshWater&reg; Salt Water System</a>.
        </em>
    </strong>
</p>

<p>
    Keep in mind that if your <a href="/blog/cost-repair-your-hot-tub" >service agreement</a> includes valet service, your dealer will drain and clean your hot tub for you on a regular schedule, so you can enjoy all of the benefits of your spa without lifting a finger.
</p>

<h2>
    HOW TO DRAIN YOUR HOT TUB
</h2>

<p>
    Draining your hot tub is a fairly simple process, especially if you <a href="/blog/choosing-the-best-placement-for-your-hot-tub" >placed your spa</a> close to a drain when you installed it. It does, however, involve a series of steps that begins with gathering the equipment you'll need to do the job.
</p>

<p>
    <strong>Gather equipment.</strong> You'll need a garden hose long enough to reach from your hot tub to a drain. If you're the type who always likes to have the perfect tool for a job, invest in a submersible pump. You'll also need clean rags and a spa shell cleaner.
</p>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="https://hotspring-2018.s3.amazonaws.com/blog/drain-your-hot-tub.jpg"
    width="100%"
    loading="lazy"
    alt="A brown hot tub with a closed cover, surrounded by greenery and rocks. A basket with towels and a step stool are placed near the tub." />
</figure>

<p>
    <strong>Drain your hot tub.</strong> Depending on the size of your spa, it should take around an hour to drain using the hot tub's drainage spigot, or ten minutes to drain with a submersible pump.
</p>

<h2>
    To drain using the spigot:
</h2>

<ul>
    <li>
        Turn the power to the spa off at the circuit breaker. You don't want the pumps or jets to run while there isn't any water in the spa.
    </li>

    <li>
        Next, find your drainage spigot. Your spa model may have two spigots, a primary and auxiliary spigot. Use the primary spigot to drain most of the water, and then open the secondary spigot to drain the internal bleed lines.
    </li>

    <li>
        Attach the garden hose to the spigot, being careful not to cross-thread. The spigot's threads will be plastic and may break if you apply too much force. Run the other end of the hose downhill or on level ground out to your drain. If you try to run the hose uphill, you'll drain some water but not all of it. It's best to transport the water to an existing drain, to avoid damage to your lawn or patio.
    </li>

    <li>
        Open the ball valve on your spigot so the water can drain.
    </li>

</ul>

<h2>
    To drain using a submersible pump:
</h2>

<ul>

    <li>
        Turn the power to the spa off at the circuit breaker.
    </li>

    <li>
        Place the pump inside the spa.
    </li>

    <li>
        If your pump's outflow hose isn't long enough to reach a drain, connect it to a garden hose.
    </li>

    <li>
        Turn the pump on and let the spa drain.
    </li>

    <li>
        When the hot tub is empty, turn off the pump, remove it from the spa, detach the hose, and return it to storage.
    </li>

</ul>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="https://hotspring-2018.s3.amazonaws.com/blog/wash-your-shells-interior.jpg"
    width="100%"
    loading="lazy"
    alt="A Hot Spring Spa hot tub with blue LED lights featuring multiple jets and a wooden step stool." />
</figure>

<p>
    <strong>Clean your empty spa.</strong> Once the water is drained, you can easily inspect and <a href="/blog/how-to-get-rid-of-mildew-in-your-hot-tub" >wash the shell's interior</a>, and remove and clean your spa filters before refilling it.
</p>

<p>
    Fortunately, your spa's shell is designed to resist dirt and stains, and cleaning it requires no more than a soft, damp rag. Many household cleaners can be harmful to your shell, so check your owner's manual before using any. When finished, rinse the shell with clean water.
</p>

<p>
    Cleaning <a href="/blog/how-do-hot-tub-filters-work" >your spa's filters</a> is even easier than cleaning the shell and should be done monthly.
</p>

<ul>

    <li>
        Remove the cover to the filter compartment.
    </li>

    <li>
        Remove any floating items from the compartment.
    </li>

    <li>
        Turn the filter retainer handle to unlock the filter and retainer.
    </li>

    <li>
        Remove the filter cartridge and retainer.
    </li>

    <li>
        Soak your filter in a degreaser, such as <a href="/hot-tub-accessories/easy-hot-tub-water-care-chlorine-maintenance">FRESHWATER&reg; spa filter cleaner</a>, according to package instructions.
    </li>

    <li>
        Rinse the filter clean with a garden hose, spraying from all angles to ensure you've washed away all debris.
    </li>

    <li>
        Replace the filter and lock the handle. Do not overtighten.
    </li>

</ul>

    loading="lazy"/>
</figure>

<p>
    <strong>Refill your hot tub.</strong> You can refill your hot tub by putting the hose in the spa and turning on the water. If you choose this method, you might accidentally stumble into a pitfall: an airlock.
</p>

<p>
    An airlock is an air bubble that gets trapped inside your hot tub's plumbing as it's being filled with water. One or more air bubbles can cause the spa to work improperly and could damage jet and circulation pumps if you run them with air inside. <a href="//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wtp1MoGoexU" >Air bubbles are relatively simple</a> to remove, although the best method varies based on the spa model. If unsure, contact your hot tub dealer for information on how best to remove them.
</p>

<p>
    To prevent air bubbles from forming during refilling, you simply need to fill the spa from the correct fill pipe instead of putting the hose directly into the spa shell. With some spas, for example, inserting a hose into the hollow standpipe beneath the filter is correct. Your owner's manual will tell you exactly where to find the fill pipe in your spa. Depending on the size of your spa and the size of your refill hose, it should take about as long to refill it as it took to drain it from the spigot.
</p>

<p>
    To see exactly how simple it is to drain and refill your spa, watch this video produced by a <a href="/hot-tub-dealers">Hot Spring dealer</a> in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

    Summer is here! At last, the season of sunny days and evening fireflies has returned. But summer can also bring oppressive temperatures and high humidity. On those days, the hot tub that's your paradise on chilly fall days, cold winter nights, and carefree spring weekends can seem like a cauldron, sending you in search of a cool shower and wondering if you can use a hot tub in summer. The fact is, there are many ways to use your home spa in warm weather, each more pleasant than the last. Here, we list a few of the best.
</p>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="https://hotspring-2018.s3.amazonaws.com/blog/hot-tub-uses-in-summer.jpg"

<h2>
    The Best Ways to Use Your Hot Tub in Summer
</h2>

<p>
    Summertime means many different things to many different people, but it all depends upon where you live. Experiencing summer in the woods of Maine is very different than experiencing it in Los Angeles, for example. In a town like Big Piney, Wyoming, the "icebox of the nation," soaking in a hot tub can be refreshing any time of year, but in the baking-sheet cities of the desert Southwest, it's typically too hot during the midday hours for a warm soak, especially in the summer. The good news, however, is that even the hottest parts of the country aren't hot all day.
</p>

<figure>
    <img decoding="async" src="https://hotspring-2018.s3.amazonaws.com/blog/morning-and-evening-soaks.jpg"
         alt="A couple summer hot-tubbing beneath the palm trees"
         width="100%"
         loading="lazy"/>
</figure>

<h2>
    Finding Balance with Morning and Evening Soaks
</h2>

<p>
    In areas with low humidity levels, temperatures start to drop as late afternoon wanes, and then bottom out late at night. The thermometer begins to rise again as the sun does. In many places, that means twilight, dusk, and dawn are ideal times to <a href="/blog/soaking-hot-tub-or-after-exercise-good-sore-muscles">relax sore muscles in your hot tub's soothing water</a>. These windows of spa opportunity are even more open in cooler, northern states, such as Washington, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and Maine.
</p>

<p>
    Hot-tubbing at night can provide tranquility on par with sitting around a campfire and watching the stars--another popular summertime activity that turns up the heat in a different type of way. Enjoying your spa during the cool morning hours can help you <a href="/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/surprising-benefits-of-owning-a-hot-tub.pdf" target="_blank">relax and find balance</a> in preparation for a long, hot summer day.
</p>

         width="100%"
         loading="lazy"/>
</figure>

<h2>
    Rainy Day, Soak Away
</h2>

<p>
    While areas with low humidity are subject to drastic temperature ranges, areas with high humidity are subject to rain-Mother Nature's way of beating the summer heat. In some regions, summer rains come daily, sometimes for weeks on end. A summer rain storm can break a hot spell in a snap. The cool peace that follows is an invitation to appreciate the earthy scent left behind and <a href="/learning-center/hot-tub-benefits">melt into the bliss</a> of your home spa.
</p>

<p>
    If you're seeking unique tranquility, and there is no threat of thunder and lightning, you can even use your hot tub <em>during</em> the rain. Sit back and enjoy the cool rain on your face as the rest of your body indulges in warmth.
</p>

<h2>
    Block Party: Home Spa Edition
</h2>

<p>
    Summer is a highly social season-a time when friends and family get together for barbecues or to just while away hazy days in <a href="/blog/outdoor-hot-tub-landscaping-ideas">backyards, on patios and decks</a>, and, of course, in hot tubs. Spas with <a href="/shop/accessories/entertainment">entertainment systems</a> provide the music to match your party's vibe and the sports and films your guests love. From classic tunes and the latest beats to big games and summer movie marathons, wireless technology allows you to connect your home entertainment system and other devices.
</p>

<p>
    Entrancing spa waterfalls and fountains augment the mood, and multicolored LED lighting ushers your gathering into the night, setting the stage for fun hot tub games or stargazing.

<h2>
    Benefits of Hot-Tubbing in Summer
</h2>

<p>
    In addition to all the fun you can have hot-tubbing during the summer season, there are health benefits you may experience. After exerting your muscles in the yard or at the gym, your hot tub can help <a href="/learning-center/hot-tub-benefits/massage">reduce soreness and aching</a>. Not only can a warm spa help release tension, but the buoyancy of the water and the massaging effect of powerful jets contribute, too. Plus, enjoying your hot tub with friends and family can help to improve social connections, as well as your overall quality of life. When the day is done, a 20-minute soak before bed can <a href="/learning-center/hot-tub-benefits/sleep">help improve your sleep</a>.
</p>

<p>
    Owning a hot tub is a joyful experience, no matter what the season. Your spa routine can help anchor your day, your week, or your year, even when the heat turns up. <a href="/hot-tub-dealers">No matter where you live</a>-whether in Miami or the land of the midnight sun-your hot tub will reward you every day you use it.
</p>

<h6>
    At Hot Spring, we hear firsthand of the positive impact our hot tubs have on our customers' lives. <h2>
    Hot Tub Safety Innovations
</h2>

<p>
    It's easy to understand why some people might worry about getting in and out of a hot tub safely. Some home spas are 3' high, or higher, and can appear challenging to those with a limited range of motion or balance problems and to people recovering from sports injuries. But a high-quality hot tub is meant to provide a blissful, luxurious, and healthful experience, not an intimidating one. To this end, innovative spa accessories have been designed so that a home hot tub can be enjoyed safely.

A base plate that slips under the hot tub cabinet keeps each handrail stable as it supports your weight. Quality handrails swing in and out of the spa and lock in place to make it even easier to enter and exit the water. Choose a handrail with a battery-powered LED light and you can safely enjoy your spa at night, too.
