What is a Salt Water Hot Tub?

Before we go too far, let's explain what a salt water hot tub is-and isn't. A salt water hot tub system is not just a hot tub filled with seawater, nor can it be achieved by dumping a bunch of table salt in your tub and hoping for the best. Salt water hot tubs use special types of salt to keep the water fresh, clean, and free of harsh smells.

How Does a Salt Water Hot Tub Work?

Hot Spring Spas' patented salt water sanitization system (found in all three Highlife®, Limelight®, and Hot Spot® Collections) is carefully designed and engineered to create a small, but constant supply of chlorine. This happens with the help of a titanium salt cartridge that generates chlorine when "energized" internal electrodes are combined with salt and water. The small amount of chlorine produced by this process is more than enough to keep the water constantly fresh and contaminant-free, while remaining too low to generate a harsh smell or irritate the eyes or skin. Instead of adding chemicals like chlorine or bromine to your water, you would add salt (made especially for hot tubs) that works with our FreshWater® Salt System to keep your water clean, fresh, and soft. It's the best of both worlds: clean water without the smell or irritation of traditional chlorine-based water.

Are Salt Water Hot Tubs Chlorine-Free?

While salt water hot tubs produce less chlorine than traditional hot tub water systems, they are not completely chlorine-free, using small amounts of chlorine to sanitize and maintain balanced water for your spa.

The Benefits of a Salt Water System

The primary benefits of salt water hot tub sanitization systems include the following:

  • Irritant-free water. Salt water hot tubs are free from chloramines, a potentially irritating byproduct produced in hot tubs when chlorine interacts with ammonia or other substances. For chloramine-sensitive individuals, a salt water hot tub system is a perfect solution, as it keeps the water constantly clean and free from any harmful microorganisms while limiting exposure to chloramines.
  • A soft, buoyant soaking experience. Salt water increases buoyancy, which many find especially conducive to relaxation in a hot tub. In addition, the water produced by a salt water sanitization system feels especially soft and gentle against the skin.
  • Water that smells and feels better. Because salt water hot tubs use fewer chemicals and chlorine for sanitization, the water feels softer on your skin, smells fresher, and is less likely to irritate eyes and skin.
  • Simplified maintenance. With unique sanitization technology that automates the balancing process, salt water hot tubs are easier to maintain than traditional spa water systems.
  • Longer-lasting water. With traditional hot tub water care systems, owners generally must drain and refill their hot tubs every three or four months. While this is a relatively simple and straightforward process, changing the water can be time-consuming and tedious. Salt water sanitization systems can keep spa water clean for up to twelve months* before needing to be replaced, which will help the environment as well.

*Many factors affect the life of spa water, such as bather load and water chemistry. When these factors are accounted for and the spa is properly maintained, the FreshWater Salt System will keep water clean and clear for up to a full year.

While no hot tub is completely maintenance-free, the maintenance for salt water hot tubs is simpler than most traditional hot tubs. Chlorine-based water care systems involve regular testing and monitoring to make sure pH levels are correct and chemicals are properly balanced. While most hot tub owners find it easy enough to follow a consistent schedule for water care and maintenance, salt water sanitization systems make the process even simpler. After the initial setup, the system practically takes care of itself, constantly producing clean, pure water on its own for months of continuous use.

    • Controller (requires dealer installation)
    • Titanium Cartridge
    • 10-lb. Bag of FreshWater Spa Salt
    • FreshWater Vanishing Act® Calcium Hardness Reducer
    • FreshWater Salt Test Strips and 5-Way Test Strips
    • Owner's manual
    • Start-Up Guide
    • Phosphate Test Strips

  2. Investing the time to set up your FreshWater Salt System correctly will ensure the long-term success of your system.

    These steps are an overview, you'll find more detailed instructions in the Hot Spring Salt System Startup Guide, or in the FreshWater Salt System Owners Manual included in your start-up kit.

    1. Test your fill water. Take a water sample to your local dealer for testing to determine if it contains high levels of metals, phosphates, and/or calcium. If high levels are detected, your dealer can recommend additional products to help bring your fill water into balance.
    2. Ensure titanium cartridge is installed (plug removed)
    3. Add FreshWater Mineral Spa Sanitizer cartridge (sold separately) to inhibit bacteria growth
    4. Turn spa on and set temp* to at least 95°F to 104°F (35°C to 40°C)
    5. Turn off Salt System (Output Level 0)
    6. Run jets to purge lines and prime pumps (adjust diverters)
    7. With jets running add salt — target 1750 ppm
      1. Start with half recommended amount, test after 5 minutes, then add up to recommended amount
    8. Test and balance water as required
    9. With jets running add chlorine to achieve 5 ppm — wait 5 minutes
      1. Test and add additional chlorine (if needed) to achieve 5 ppm
    10. Use Vanishing Act if required and remove per instructions (Day 1 or 2)
    11. When chlorine is at 5 ppm and water has reached the desired temperature, your spa is ready to enjoy!

We created this short video to provide a visual overview of the start-up process:

  1. Let your control panel be your guide for stress-free monitoring and maintenance.

    Your control panel prompts you every 10 days to verify and adjust the system if needed.

    1. Always test your water before using your spa to ensure it is properly balanced. Depending on variables like frequency of use and bather load, adjust the output level on your control panel to maintain the recommended minimum chlorine level of 3ppm. If needed, check your user manual for products to help raise or reduce free chlorine in your hot tub.
    2. Test and balance spa water using a FreshWater 5-Way Test Strip. Measure chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels to determine if your water is in the OK ranges specified for the system.
    3. Your FreshWater Salt System control panel will display your chlorine output level. Adjust as needed to maintain a minimum chlorine target level of 3ppm.
    4. The system status on your display panel refreshes every thirty minutes to let you know if the system is performing optimally. It reflects a number of elements that can impact performance, including the salt level, cartridge status, and water temperature.

    Your FreshWater Salt System Owner's Manual will provide all the information you need to monitor your spa and instructions on how to keep your water balanced.

  2. Every four months*, replace the Salt System Cartridge.

    The disposable and maintenance-free titanium cartridge can be replaced in just a few seconds, without tools.

    Instructions on how to replace a Salt System Cartridge can be found on the spa's control panel and in the FreshWater Salt System Owner's Manual.

  3. Make soaking in the warm, clear water of your Hot Spring Spa part of your daily wellness routine.

It doesn't take very long for untreated water to develop a tell-tale layer of film and for the container it's sitting in to become coated with algae. Even untreated water that is constantly filtered becomes cloudy and needs to be changed often.

To prevent contamination of water in hot tubs, owners typically add a class of chemicals called halogens that include chlorine, bromine, and iodine. When mixed with water, halogens form weak acids that are very effective at killing bacteria and fighting viruses. They work as oxidizers that burn away organic compounds. However, these acids can also irritate the eyes and skin, which is why many people long for a chemical-free hot tub water care system.

While chlorine and bromine systems are the industry standards, a chemical-free hot tub depends on alternative treatments and creativity from the owner, at the very least. Even then, sanitizers must be introduced before you can safely immerse yourself in the spa water. So, a truly chemical-free hot tub is not altogether possible.

It is possible, however, to get closer to a chemical-free spa environment with a system innovative enough to generate its own cleaning power. The idea of a chemical-free hot tub water care system points to greater convenience because there is no need to measure additives. The water care systems that get close to chemical free do the work of generating reactive molecules that kill bacteria in the process of becoming non-reactive molecules.

The most common system of this type is an ozone system. Ozone is a molecule that consists of three oxygen atoms instead of the usual two. This extra atom of oxygen leaves the ozone molecules unstable and very reactive with the organic compounds that make up microbes, as well as oils from skin and lotions.

When a molecule of ozone encounters one of these compounds, it breaks apart, forming regular oxygen molecules (O2). And that third, free oxygen atom binds with the foreign compound to make a new compound. Effectively, ozone rips microbes apart. It will also do the same with other compounds in spa water, allowing them to be more efficiently filtered out.

Because ozone systems tend to process chlorine too quickly, ionized silver is often used as an antimicrobial agent instead. In combination, an ozone system and silver ion purifier help to reduce the amount of chemicals you need in your spa. However, you will still need to add MPS, a non-chlorine oxidizing shock treatment every time before you use your spa. And it will still require a small amount of chlorine on a weekly basis to keep your water fresh and long lasting. While ozone systems can't claim to be entirely chemical free, they offer a great water care option and alternative to the traditional chlorine- and bromine-dependent systems.

WHY “NATURAL” ADDITIVES DON'T FULLY SANITIZE

If you search online for “chemical free hot tubs,” you may be surprised to find spa products as result—bottled additives that are sold as “natural” water care alternatives. These additives are enzymes, proteins that serve as catalysts for a chemical reaction. Calling them “chemical-free” hot tub treatments is a bit of a misnomer because, in reality, they fall under a specialized class of chemicals—albeit, ones that occur naturally.

In hot tubs, enzymes work by breaking apart the oils that are introduced into the water when bathers sweat or as suntan lotions wash off. Enzymes make it easier for the filters to remove the oils and helps to keep the water clear. However, they do not significantly reduce the levels of bacteria and other microbes present.

Although enzyme treatments can have a positive effect on water clarity and feel, they are not sanitizers. At best, enzymes act as supplements to water care, helping to keep hot tub water free from organic compounds. While non-halogen water additives can't combat microbes, you can find built-in water care systems that require almost no chemical additives and still significantly reduce bacteria numbers for a clean, stress-free soak.

Spa water purification plays a vital role in your relationship with your new home spa, because whether you choose a salt water hot tub system or a chlorine system it's an ongoing process that you sustain. TRADITIONAL CHLORINE WATER CARE

When you think of pure spa water, you probably think of chlorination. Hot tub owners and pool owners have been using chlorine to keep their water clean for decades. Chlorine, which is even added in small amounts to our drinking water, is a proven method of eliminating harmful (or simply gross) bacteria and other contaminants from spa water.

How Chlorine Eliminates Harmful Bacteria

Typically, chlorine is added to spa water in liquid or dissolvable solid forms. An element that is naturally gaseous at room temperature, chlorine combines with oxygen and hydrogen in water to form hypochlorous acid. This compound is highly effective at killing bacteria, such as E. coli and salmonella, as well as the influenza virus. As common sense would indicate, the best way to prevent the spread of bacteria is to keep anyone infected out of the hot tub until the infection has passed.

Side Effects of Chlorination

When hypochlorous acid attacks contaminants in water, it creates byproducts called chloramines. These byproducts are, frankly, smelly. If you've been to a public pool, you're probably familiar with the odor. While hypochlorous acid is a weak acid, it is an acid nonetheless. It's entirely safe-you have more powerful acids in your own stomach-but it can irritate sensitive areas, such as the eyes and skin. Hypochlorous acid is why your eyes hurt more when you swim without goggles in a chlorinated pool than when you swim in a pristine mountain lake.

Proper Chlorine System Maintenance

To keep your spa water clean using chlorine, you'll need to maintain a few conditions, including the proper concentration of chlorine in your water. Typically, the concentration level is tested using strips of treated paper. If the level is too low, add more chlorine; if it's too high, dilute the water by draining some chlorinated water from the spa and then adding untreated water. The exact amount of chlorine you'll need to add, or water you'll need to remove, depends on the size of your hot tub and the level of concentration you need to achieve. Don't worry-the chlorine packaging should include instructions to guide you through the process. Test your chlorine level at least once a week-more if you use your hot tub frequently.

In addition to chlorine testing, you'll also have to test the pH level of your spa water. Hypochlorous acid functions most effectively when your spa water has a pH range of 7.2-7.8, which is slightly above the neutral value of 7. If your spa water has a pH value outside of this range, hypochlorous acid will not form as readily. To keep your water in the appropriate range, test the pH each time you test your chlorine concentration. Your local hot tub dealer sells pH test strips and the chemicals used to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of your water. Most new hot tubs come with a water care starter kit to help you get your hot tub ready as soon as it's delivered.

It takes a little time and effort to use chlorine to keep your spa water levels where they ought to be, but the method is effective. Your hot tub's shell keeps your water contained inside your tub; it's also a key determining factor in how well your spa retains heat. As the surface of your hot tub presents to the world, the shell must be strong enough to stand up to mishaps and to withstand years of regular use. If aesthetic concerns are important to you, it must be visually appealing as well as highly functional. Hot tub shells come in a variety of materials, each possessing their own strengths and weaknesses. Learning more about what hot tub shells are made of can give you a better idea about which hot tub would be best suited for your needs.

Until the 1970s, hot tub shells were primarily constructed out of wood. Today, only a few manufacturers continue to craft shells this way; these days, a typical hot tub shell is most likely to be made from vinyl, rotomolded plastic, or acrylic. Hot tubs can also be constructed from cement, stainless steel, fiberglass, or inflatable PVC, though these are less common.

HOT TUB SHELLS MADE FROM VINYL

Some hot tubs are constructed through a process in which a vinyl liner is placed over a frame made from another material, such as cement. This is the same method that's frequently used in the manufacturing of swimming pools. Vinyl liner hot tubs are commonly found attached to inground pools; while they're inexpensive to produce, they don't retain heat well. A vinyl liner hot tub may be relatively cheap to purchase, especially if it's part of a package deal with your swimming pool, but what you save on the sticker price may be eaten up by the cost of the electricity it takes to keep your hot tub warm. Vinyl is not an especially durable material; a vinyl hot tub shell is more likely to crack or tear than a shell made from stronger materials. Continuous exposure to sunlight will fade the color of your vinyl hot tub liner, while an incorrect balance of chemicals in your hot tub can damage it.

HOT TUB SHELLS MADE FROM ROTOMOLDED PLASTIC

Rotomolded hot tubs are made from plastic powder, which is added to a mold, heated until it melts, and then rotated until it covers every bit of the mold in a smooth and even layer. Unlike the glossy surface of acrylic shells, rotomolded plastic shells have a dull matte finish. Compared to acrylic shells, plastic shells are relatively lightweight. This results in a lighter and more easily transportable hot tub, which may give you more options as to where it may be placed in your yard or on your deck. The downside, however, is an inability to efficiently retain heat. As with hot tubs built with vinyl liners, the initial savings from their lower purchase price will be eroded over time, as owners of rotomolded hot tubs typically pay more in electricity than owners of more energy-efficient spas.

HOT TUB SHELLS MADE FROM ACRYLIC

An acrylic hot tub shell is made from a single sheet of acrylic, which is heated until it begins to melt, then placed over a mold. Vacuums help suck away any air trapped between the mold and the acrylic sheet, resulting in a smooth and perfectly formed shell.
